All these vivid colors, and nothing over 2 feet tall! We don't see the intense color changes in the trees that one does on the mainland as we have lots of oak and pine, and few maples. It's been a very dry summer here as in many parts of the country, and the plants are enjoying the respite. As the leaves fall from the trees we'll see a lot more of the lichen on the bark and branches... and stone walls, gravestones, etc. Lichen is a small but florishing form of plant life. Martha's Vineyard has a system of land conservation that has resulted in some fantastic places to hike, kayak, horseback ride, walk the dog, etc., around the island.
