Snow in August

Along with the usual work at the studio, I've had the good fortune this summer to be able to spend a bit of time at the easel.

This particular oil painting has attracted a certain amount of attention with passersby due in part to the blazing orange ground I used to start the landscape which actually is a snow scene, a view I have from my kitchen window in mid-winter on Martha's Vineyard.

Here is the painting to date -- I laid in an orange ground for a few reasons: firstly I like the contrast of the complementary color showing through here and there, it livens up the painting. Secondly it allows me to easily introduce the dead leaves (not yet painted) which sprinkle the trees and shrubs at this time of year, and thirdly, it's a lot more fun to paint over this color and see a scene come to life, than it is to attack a totally white canvas!

The canvas measures about 5'wide x 3.5' tall, and I'll post more images as it comes along.
